Engine Mount Failure: Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

Engine mounts secure the engine to the vehicle while helping isolate engine vibration from the body.

When a mount becomes damaged, unusual vibration and movement may occur.

What Does an Engine Mount Do?

An engine mount supports the engine and transmission assembly.

It also helps control movement caused by engine torque.

Depending on the vehicle, mounts may use rubber, hydraulic or other damping structures.

Signs of a Damaged Engine Mount

Excessive Vibration

A damaged mount may allow more engine vibration to reach the cabin.

This can be particularly noticeable at idle.

Clunking During Acceleration

Excessive engine movement can create a knocking or clunking sound when accelerating or changing load.

Engine Movement

A severely damaged mount may allow the engine to move more than normal.

Harsh Gear Changes

Excessive drivetrain movement can sometimes affect the feel of gear changes.

Transmission and drivetrain components should also be inspected.

Visible Rubber Damage

Cracked, torn or collapsed rubber can indicate mount deterioration.

Hydraulic mounts may also show fluid leakage when damaged.

Why Do Engine Mounts Fail?

Possible causes include:

  • Normal aging
  • Heat exposure
  • Oil contamination
  • Excessive vibration
  • High engine movement
  • Damaged rubber or hydraulic components

Should All Engine Mounts Be Replaced Together?

Not always.

Each mount should be inspected individually.

However, if one mount has failed because of age, the condition of the other mounts should also be checked.

Choosing the Correct Engine Mount

Verify:

  • Engine specification
  • Mounting position
  • Left or right application
  • Manual or automatic transmission where applicable
  • OE number
  • Mounting design
Correct identification is essential because multiple mounts may be used on the same vehicle.
